Originally, Dootayeon was called Deureso and later changed to Dootayeon, named after Doota temple which is believed to have been in the vicinity.
The Dootayeon is a plunge pool which was created when Sataecheon (stream), a branch of Suyipcheon (stream), cut off meander neck in the process of incised meandering.
A plunge pool is a depression at the base of a waterfall formed by the abrading action of falling water and sediments on the base rock.
A characteristic of the Dootayeon is an old river channel created due to the meander neck cut-off by the Sataecheon.
There used to be water flowing in the old river channel but not anymore as water has been diverted into new channels.
The formation process of the Dootayeon includes incised meander; meander neck cut-off; the development of old river channel and falls; and the formation of plunge pool.
First, the meandering sections of the Sataecheon were eroded so they became closer to form meander necks. As the meander necks were continuously being eroded, they were cut through to form a new, almost straight channel.
Second, the sections of meander cut-off remained as old river channels.
Finally, falls and plunge pools were formed at the points of meander neck cut-off due to height differences between upstream and downstream.
The potholes on the upstream bedrock are located higher than the current channel · the evidence that the channel in the past flowed at a higher level than that of today.
A meander core refers to the mountain or hill that have been separated from the surrounding ridges by meander neck cut-off and then environed by the current and old river channels.
Currently in the meander core have been established eco-trails and observatories to view the Dootayeon.
