Andesitic lava of Jeungsimsa valley in Mudeungsan is one of the lava layers that has erupted a number of times. The lava layer appears dark green or dark gray. Parts of the layer that have weathered appear brown or reddish brown. Andesitic lava of Jeungsimsa valley consists of andesitic lava and intrusion of micrographic granite. Andesitic lava facies are normally found in areas northwest of Hwasun-eup, Hwasun-gun, and around Dongbok Lake, however, the type locality is Mudeungsan. The lava layer preserves diverse conditions from the volcanic activities of Mudeungsan. Particularly, Jeungsimsa has academic and educational value as the rocks of the valley were formed by volcanic eruptions of Mudeungsan during the Cretaceous period. Founded by Buddhist monk Cheolgamseonsa during Silla Kingdom, Jeungsimsa Temple was remodeled by Buddhist monk Hyesoguksa in 1094 (11th year of King Sunjong’s reign) and again by Bang Kim in 1443 (25th year of King Sejong’s reign). Jeungsimsa is the largest temple in Gwangju and its surrounding area.
