Jigong talus on the southern slope of Mudeungsan is found around Gyubongam (a Buddhist temple) between elevations 700 m and 1,100 m above sea level. Jigong talus covers an area of 42,000 km2. The uppermost part of the talus slope, shaped like a tongue, stretches for 150 m at 1000-1,100 m above sea level. Developed on the western slope of Gyubongam, the lower part of the talus slope covers an area of 150 m between elevations 700m and 950 m above sea level. The upper part of the talus slope consists of vertical colonnades. Jigong talus features massive rocks accumulated in an irregular pattern, similar to the rocks found on the cliffs with colonnades at the summit of Mudeungsan and around Gyubongam. A legend says that an Indian monk named Jigong came here and built a stone chamber to practice seated meditation while he stayed in Gwangju during the Goryeo period (during the reign of King Chungsuk). It is told that he laid the hundreds of millions of rocks using supernatural power gained through seated meditation.
