Samhyeongjiegulbawi of Dokdo is so called as the 3 separate sea caves are connected and the two rocky islets to east look like two friendly brothers. Located between Dongdo and Seodo, the two islets and Samhyeongjiegulbawi look like one mountain when viewed from northwest. This is another reason why Dokdo is also known as ‘Sambongdo’ or ‘three peaks’. Samheongjiegulbawi is a 44 m high sea stack. A sea stack is a rocky islet, formed by wave and wind erosion. The biggest of the three islets has 3 caves in three different directions. Because salt is carried even to the top parts of the rocks by waves and wind, plants do not grow on the islets.
