Located at Namyang-ri, Seo-myun, Ulleung-gun, Guksubawi, or Noodle Rock, is given its name as the cliff wall looks like noodles picked up with chopsticks. Noodle Rock, a vertical wall composed of trachyte, stands 30 m high and stretches 300 m long in north-south direction. Columnar joints which are formed as a result of rapid cooling and contraction of magma or lava flow are well-visible along the cliff. Noodle Rock was formed by an eruption of trachytic lava approximately 1.75 million years ago. The outstanding and unique scenery of the columnar joints have drawn keen attention. Furthermore, the columnar joints provide information on the eruption and cooling of trachytic lava as well as the formation and erosion process of the joints. Therefore, Noodle Rock is a geological attraction that has both high aesthetic and academic values.
