Mt. Yonghwasan (878m above sea level), made of granite, is a landmark of Hwacheon as well as a sacred place for Hwaeomjong, a Buddhist denomination, in the Unified-Shilla. The name Yonghwasan was derived from a Buddhist doctrine that Maitreya would attain Buddhahood under a dragon flower tree. In general, a granite is formed deep below in the earth by cooled magma and uplifted to the earth’s surface by crustal movement. After overburden gets removed from it by erosion, it begins to expand due to reduced pressure. This process results in surface fractures through which water infiltrates deep into the ground, causing deep-seated weathering. As a result, the surface gets so fragile as to be broken even by hand pressure. On the other hand, less weathered granitic rocks that have been exhumed to the ground surface would have little contact with water so they are no longer subject to deep-seated weathering and tend to form large rocky hills, i.e., Mt. Yonghwasan. That is, the Yonghwasan was formed by the exhumation of a dome-shaped rock mass after the removal of erosion surface by deep-seated weathering. The mountain boasts of a majestic view of exfoliation joints and weathered microtopography. The exfoliation joints refer to a landform with planar fractures which develop in concentric circles parallel to the ground surface when overburden gets removed by the erosion. Rocks like granite, formed deep in the earth under high pressure and temperature, erode away near the earth’s surface after going through a physical and chemical change; the subsequent development of rugged surface on them is called weathered micro-topography. The weathered micro-topography includes tors and weathering pits such as gnammas, grooves and tafoni. In Mt. Yonghwasan, tower-shaped tors were developed on its dome-surface slopes by the effects of vertical or horizontal joints.. Oeum-ri, Gandong-myeon in Hwacheon-gun, the village where Mt. Yonghwasan is located, is also called Vietnam Village since a military training camp for the Vietnam War was built in it. For enhanced battle skills in a tropical area, various military training programs were executed such as tactical training, boot camp and education on military apparatus. However, since the deployment was ceased, the training site has been abandoned for more than 30 years; all the facilities except for a cookhouse have been ruined beyond recognition. However, in 2008, in an attempt to enhance the war veterans’ self-respect, Hwacheon-gun established a Vietnam Veteran Meeting Memorial Hall on the site. The village has since been re-evaluated as a former military training camp for the Vietnam War.
