The limestone cave of Baekasan was designated as South Jeolla Province Monument (no. 24) on Sept 30th, 1976. However, in order to protect the cave, it is not open to the public. The cave was created after limestone was dissolved by groundwater. It is the only limestone cave in Jeolla province. Similar to the limestone caves found in Gangwon province, it is believed that the cave was formed during the early Paleozoic (500 million years ago). The large-scale limestone zone was formed as organisms that produce carbonate died and were accumulated in the warm, shallow seas. Later, groundwater seeped through the cracks and joints of the limestone layers and came into contact with carbon dioxide, forming carbonic acid. When calcium carbonate-rich rocks came into contact with carbonic acid, the properties of the rocks turned into calcium hydrogen carbonate. Finally, continued dissolution of the rocks led to the formation of the cave.
